Our Godliness and Our Cleanliness: What we should do
Find out from the nearby place of worship how much garbage is being generated everyday.
Estimate how much garbage is accumulated in one mela or Jaatara or festival and where does it go.
Estimate now much garbage is thrown around the places of worship, make a note of the problems faced by sanitary workers.
The management of places of worship should be encouraged to clean the place and programmes voluntarily.
Sign boards should be kept at vantage points in pilgrim centres asking the pilgrims not to litter and to put waste only in waste baskets and waste bins.
Request the temple authorities to distribute prasadam in paper bags, leaf plates etc, which are easily biodegradable, and definitely not in plastics.
Natural cleansers like Shikakai and herbal bath powders, which easily get dissolved by the earth should be used instead of soaps so that these eco-friendly practices will not destroy the water bodies. Imagine the amount of pollutants that would be released especially during the times of large congregation of pilgrims like at Kumbh melas and Pushkara baths, Idd and healing meetings.
