Public Sanitation: What we should do
Conduct a survey on the sanitary conditions in your locality. Where do people dump the garbage? In the vicinity of colony or in dustbins? Find out the amount of garbage generated by each household.
What are the methods used by the sanitation workers to clean your area.
What are the difficulties encountered by the sanitation workers, rag pickers and animal keepers?
What are the health hazards associated with the work of sanitation workers and rag pickers?
Conduct meetings, painting competitions, essay competitions and other programmes highlighting the importance of clean surroundings.
Try to spend some time every day on programs like clean and green.
Try to implement methods such as segregation of wastes into solid and damp wastes, biodegradable and plastic wastes and propagate this type of segregation in your colony.
Try to convince people in your colony to implement the scheme of door-to-door collection of garbage.
After segregation of liquid and damp wastes, encourage the use of damp waste for composting while the plastics and metals should be sold to traders in old wares for recycling. Request the elders in your colony to follow such methods.
