Air Pollution
For November/December control of air pollution is the theme. As during these months the air has inversion conditions, the air pollutants travel and remain at the ground level i.e., 3 to 4 feet height, which has direct impact on children. As children are more affected, they themselves conduct campaigns to make the citizens aware of the effects of air pollution and insist on taking necessary precautions which include regular pollution check, right air pressure, tuning of the vehicle, right oil mix and right load to reduce air pollution levels.
We are living in a fast-paced world. Everyday our needs are growing and we are coming up with new ideas to make our lives comfortable. It is hard to believe that the competitive spirit is the cause for increasing air pollution, but it is true. When we think of pollution, the first thing that comes to our mind is air pollution and we picture a factory with a chimney letting out thick clouds of smoke but reality is different. In the present world, the vehicles pollute more than the industries as everyday, tons of poisonous gases and carcinogenic substances are let out into the air. The automobiles release majority of these substances. Every following day life supporting fresh air is becoming scarce. The condition in our cities is such that it is impossible to walk even a few meters with out feeling an irritation in our nose or eyes. These pollutants cause watering of eyes and cause skin and other allergies. No wonder today oxygen bars have become a reality as there is a dearth of fresh air.
Every day vehicles release oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, dust particles, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxides. They are becoming a threat to the health of human beings. In this silicon age it has become a tendency to analyse every issue with the help of computers, but seldom are the recommendations implemented. About 30% of the vehicles on roads today are more than 15 years old. The pollution caused by the two stroke and diesel engines is very serious.
During Holi and Sankranthi, in the name of festivities people collect wooden planks, tree branches, tyres, plastics and other items and make a bonfire of them right in the middle of the roads. This not only causes air pollution but also wastage of precious products like wood.
