Teacher Training Programmes in Nanded

Consumer Education Society in association with CPR Environment Education Centre organized Teacher Training Programmes for B.Ed and D.Ed students of Maharashtra in the month of March 2011. The Progrmmes were held in 6 Colleges in Nanded District. About 1100 Teacher Trainees have participated in the programmes conducted.Multi media presentations, interactive games were part of the methodologies used. R.Sabesh, Officer-in-Charge, Andhra Pradesh State Office and Gali Udaya Kumar, Secretary, Consumer Education Society were the Resource Persons in all these programmes.

Three screenings of 10 tactics in India

Consumer Education Society (CES) held three screenings of '10 tactics' in February and March: two in the Latur District and a further screening in Guntur, India.

Latur District, Maharashtra state, India, saw two screenings of 10 tactics; the first being in Udgir on 2 February and the second one in Loni the following day. These screenings were organised by CES and shown as part of teacher training programmes. Around 100 teacher trainees and NGO representatives participated in these events and were said to have found the film to be highly informative and inspiring.

Aruna Katragadda from Vikasa Dhatri, an organisation which offers Telugu e-books for free downloads said about the event: “it was amazing to see the film knowing that people and communities had benefited with the available information and to learn how they turned the information into action."

On 22 March a further screening was organised by CES in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. This screening was organised as part of the ‘Free and Open Source Software Workshop' for civil society organisations and was attended by 12 representatives from different voluntary organisations. This screening had been planned for December 2009 but due to the political and social unrest that erupted in Andhra Pradesh regarding the bifurcation of the state, the event had to be postponed. The organisations that watched the film found it informative and inspiring and hope to use the knowledge, they gleaned, in their work.
Many of the participants are new to the internet and are excited about the happenings that are taking place using the latest ICTs.

CES is a volunteer driven organisation that works to protect and promote consumers’ interests. They aim to expand and strengthen the capabilities of consumers and civil society groups to carry out effective Consumer Education Programmes. Their main focus is on consumer rights, environment education, health, poverty, gender and good governance. CES have developed training modules focusing on behavioural change in areas such as HIV/AIDS, community forest management, gender and environmental education. They have published articles and guides on these subjects and the Telugu books developed as part of the CES Series can be downloaded free here.
CES strongly feel that ICTs can be used effectively to promote any developmental issue at a low cost and that they are now well placed to help social organisations with their work in the area. Therefore CES have already started to organise Free and Open Source Software Training Programmes for civil society organisations. After coming across '10 tactics' they found the work interesting and wanted to screen the film in India to benefit larger sections of the society. CES plans to use the film as a resource material in their workshops that they conduct in Engineering Colleges and Bachelor of Education College.

Free and Open Source Software workshops

Consumer Education Society is planning to conduct Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) workshops across Andhra Pradesh. A series of workshops on Free and Open Source software specifically tailored for non profits and civil society groups will be organized. It enables more freedom and flexibility in choosing software for everyday use without expensive overheads and license fees and without worrying about piracy. The Representatives from Nonprofit organizations, civil groups, Youth and Women organizations can participate in these workshops.
The workshop covers the following broad domains:
* Free and Open Source Software
* Introduction to Linux based distribution Ubuntu. (A free alternative to MS Windows)
* Open Office (equivalent of MS office)
* Internet Tools (firefox, pidgin, thunderbird) (a brower, IM client and email client)
* Desktop publishing (GIMP- photo editor, scribus-publishing, inkscape-drawing), Web publishing (CMS, blogs).

These will be fine tuned for each workshop based on participant profile and expectations.
The first such workshop will be conducted from 16th December to 18th December 2009 at GUNTUR. There is no participation fee. Working lunch will be provided by the organizers. No TA/DA will be paid. Training Workshops in Nagapur

As part of awareness and education initiatives in Maharashtra state CPREEC organized a series of Training Workshops for the benefit of Teacher trainees in and around Nagpur city from 16 February to 20 February 2009 in collaboration with the Consumer Education Society. Around 1000 B.Ed and D.Ed students participated in the Environment Education workshops. The current topics such as Biodiversity conservation, Climate change mitigation, Sustainable development were some of the topics covered during the workshop by the experts. C.P.R. Environmental Education Centre is a Centre of Excellence of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, established jointly by the Ministry and the C.P. R Foundation, Chennai. CPREEC has been set up to increase consciousness and knowledge about environment and the major environmental problems facing the country today.

Competition on developing new products from waste

Andhra Pradesh National Green Corps organized a competition for youth below 18 years of age to design, develop innovative useful products/articles from household waste like plastics, polythene covers, old cloths or any other material that is not in use. As per the rules of the competition the candidates provided the information about the raw material used and the total expenditure involved in making the product. Selected products were displayed at a function organized on the occasion of World Environment Day on 5th June 2006. Traders from different parts of Visakhapatnam, particularly from hotels, bakeries, fast food centers and food stalls have attended the workshop and shared their experiences regarding consumer response in implementation of plastic carry bags ban. To effectively guide the students in their activities, a two-tier training programme is conducted. First, the master trainers (one or two from each district) are trained, who in turn, train the teachers in-charge of ecoclubs in each district. These school and college teachers are the backbone of this student-based programme. Every year there are refresher programmes and interaction meets for these Green Teachers to address the most topical environmental issues.
Considering that environmental education is now limited to conceptual learning and memorising facts, it may not lead to behavioral change. The training programmes conducted as part of the National Green Corps focus on learning the methods for adopting new behavior patterns directly and inculcating habits for promoting environmental conservation.

NGC and Curriculum

All NGC activity targets the students. The content analysis of the textbooks reveals that there are some topical and extremely environmentally important items in the curriculum. The learning of these items will neither be long lasting nor effective without activities and action programmes. The National Green Corps activity in-fact supplements the curriculum. Learning without behavioral modification or without habit formation is futile, especially in the field of environmental protection and conservation.
The Supreme Court order 860/91 has, in fact, come as a helping hand for us. The Court ordered that the school curriculum has to have the environmental component. It instructed the National Council for Educational Research and Training, New Delhi to study the syllabi of various classes and incorporate changes to facilitate environmental education in schools. The NCERT came up with a sensitively worked out syllabus for all classes upto X. It even worked out the teaching methodologies and likely outcome of such activities.
As schools grappled with the new subject, APNGC realised the need to provide proper published material to support all activity towards environment education. Several schools approached us for the material.
Realising the urgency and the fact that all hard work done so far will be lost if the ship of environment education is left rudderless without any written material to fall back on, APNGC came up with activity books for all classes from Class I to Class X. These books aim to help children understand their environment more sensitively. They aim to make the students want to take care of their environment.APNGC has also brought out literature for college students. The reading material published is in the form of orientation books and activity booklets for graduate study streams and for students of law, medicine, engineering and education. Written material is also planned for students of management, agriculture and other streams.

How Can One Become A NGC Member

Any student can become a member of NGC. Once you are in the NGC team of your class, school or college, you are a NGC member.
However, if your school or college is not a 'Green school', meaning if it is not a member of NGC, you can go to your teacher or headmistress. You can tell them why you want your school to become a Green school, why you want to become a fellow of the NGC group. Convince them that all of us have to work to save our environment. APNGC is only a focal point for all such activity in the student community in the state.
Ours is a movement. Our goal is to sensitize others, be they in our class, school, college or in the community at large. We will bring about a change in people's attitude. Attitudinal change will, eventually, lead to action. Agreed, the road is full of bumps, stiff opposition or even cynicism may stare us in the face, but we know we shall together make things happen!

College NGC

There should be NGC units in each of the classes in colleges too. If it is a college offering different courses of study, it should have a NGC unit for each of the courses and if there are sections of classes, there should be a unit in each of these sections.
Each unit may have 5-10 members for each theme number of students in each class. The membership could be rolling, new set of students included every two months, so that all students are oriented and sensitized towards environmental issues.
Initially, simple themes could be worked out for students to get used to the sensitized ideology. These students could work on any or all of the five themes of air, water, land, energy and beautification apart from bringing the awareness in the public about the cleanliness in the temples and during the pilgrims, at public places, like parks, museums, etc.
A college NGC unit could be formed with about 50 -100 students picked up from different classes. Each course, class and section should be included in it. It will work under the guidance of five NGC College teachers selected based of their inclination towards environmental work by the head of the college. At the top of this unit will be the head of the institution.
The college unit will oversee the work done by the various NGC units in each of the classes in the institution. The college unit will also set certain works/goals for the different class NGC units every month. It has to also keep the tempo of environmental activity in the college at an active level, always providing it with motivation, direction and thrust.
The gamut of activity that could be taken up may range from a campaign for cleanliness at public places to a campaign to save our temple environs from plastics. Spreading messages for changing attitudes towards celebrating our festivals like a noiseless but bright Deepawali, college students can reach out to the community. Their energy, enthusiasm and motivation will go a long way in persuading people towards environmental action.In professional colleges, students could take up projects for study that involve environmental implications. This will help them mould their actions as a professional once they enter the field.

National Green Corps

An Overview
We all know that we are part of the environment we live in. And the solution to many environmental problems lie in our attitude towards environment. Be it awareness to keep our surroundings clean or the realisation to conserve natural resources by re-using and recycling wherever possible, they all are attitudinal. On the surface it looks simple. But changing the attitudes of 100 crore people is not going to happen overnight. The best way to attempt to bring about a change in the attitudes in the society is through children. They have no vested interests. They are impressionable. They are our future. They are the single most important influence in any family. With this realisation the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India has decided to launch the National Green Corps Progarnme (NGC) in all Districts of our vast country.
The main objectives of this programme are to educate children about their immediate environment and impart knowledge about the eco-systems, their inter-dependence and their need for survival, through visits and demonstrations and to mobilise youngsters by instilling in them the spirit of scientific inquiry into environmental problems and involving them in the efforts of environmental preservation. A programme of raising ‘National Green Corps’ through the Eco clubs was launched during 2001-2002. Under this programme, Eco-clubs are being set up in schools and colleges across the country.
